Do you know what your firm is worth? In speaking with several hundred buyers over the last 19 years, we have listened and understand what is most important to the buyers.
1. A great location: Buyers prefer locations that offer easy access, ample parking, and have great visibility. These qualities will also make it easier to attract new business when potential clients are evaluating their options.
2. High profitability: Cash is King! No big surprise. So, firms offering high earnings are definitely more appealing.
3. Culture: A firm culture capable of attracting and retaining great clients and great talent is highly appealing to buyers.
4. Talent/Employees: Having younger, trained, and capable staff in place is another key to attracting buyers to a business.
5. Recurring revenues: Firms with recurring revenues offer stability to a firm, especially when there is a good amount of revenue coming into the firm in the “off season” or on a monthly basis.
6. Strong client relationships: Sellers that have a strong bond with their client base will usually have a high transition rate to a new owner. Having regular “touches” with clients creates a stronger bond to the firm.
There are many other things that play into a buyer’s consideration of a firm. As you can see, many of the items listed above have nothing to do with the cash flow of the business, confirming that the price and terms of a deal are not all there is to a deal!
